Explain the material before arranging collection

Grass cuttings, leaves and garden growth are not the same as a mixed pile containing pots, old furniture, rubble or treated timber. Describe what is present and show the whole pile where possible. If bags contain a mixture or you are unsure about the contents, say so rather than assuming everything can leave together.

Already cut, or still growing?

This distinction changes the job. If material is already gathered, the enquiry concerns assessing and removing that material. If the garden itself needs cutting back, use our overgrown-garden clearance service so the work on the growth is included in the scope.

Mention any existing waste when booking garden work. Do not assume that a quote for taking away new cuttings also includes an older pile elsewhere on the property.

Show the quantity and access

Send wide photographs, an approximate description of the pile or bags, and a photograph of the route out. Include steps, narrow gates, shared passages and access through the house. Tell us who will provide access and whether any permissions are needed.

Keep the material where it is until handling arrangements have been agreed if moving it would be difficult or unsafe. The aim of the enquiry is to plan the work, not to ask you to do heavy preparation before a quote.

Confirm the removal arrangements

Agree which materials are covered, the collection arrangements and the price before the visit. Where removal forms part of a gardening job, make sure that is clear in the quote. A description such as “tidy the garden” should not leave either side guessing about what stays or goes.

For private waste removal, GOV.UK explains the checks householders should make, including checking the collector’s waste-carrier registration. Garden waste also needs appropriate disposal. Ask for the relevant details and check them before agreeing a collection.

Could some material stay usefully?

A quick checklist for a collection enquiry

Include the postcode, what the waste is, whether it is loose or bagged, an approximate quantity and the route from the pile to the collection point. Note anything that changes how it can be carried, such as steps or a narrow side passage. If the pile contains soil, stones, pots or other non-green material, list that separately. This gives us a clearer basis to confirm what can be collected and what the visit would cover before you commit.
