Gardener in Blackheath
Blackheath has some of the largest and most established gardens we work in, and they need a different approach from a terraced plot.
The Georgian and Victorian houses around the heath sit on bigger plots than almost anywhere else nearby, with mature trees and planting that in some cases has been developing for a century or more. Much of the area is a conservation area.
Two things follow from that. First, there is real lawn here — proper areas of grass that reward being cut properly and regularly rather than knocked back when it gets long. Second, the mature trees mean shade, leaf fall and root competition, and grass growing under an established tree is never going to behave like grass in the open. Managing expectations about that is part of the job.
Established planting
In gardens like these the planting is usually the valuable part, and the mistake is cutting into it too enthusiastically. Mature shrubs cut back hard at the wrong time of year can take two seasons to recover. We would rather do less on the first few visits and learn what is in a garden than tidy something that took thirty years to establish.
Autumn
Leaf clearance is a bigger part of the year here than in most of the areas we cover, and it runs from October well into December with all those mature trees. It is worth planning for rather than treating as one visit.

Questions about this service
Can you maintain a large garden on regular visits?
Yes. Bigger gardens usually need a longer visit rather than a more frequent one, and we will tell you which after seeing it.
My lawn will not grow under the trees. Can you fix it?
Sometimes it improves with the right cutting height and feeding. Sometimes deep shade means grass is the wrong answer and a shade planting or mulch is better. We will say which we think it is.
