Gardener in Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace sits on the highest ground around here, which makes for steep gardens and more wind than anywhere else we work.
Two things make gardening up here distinctive. The gradient, which on some streets is severe enough that gardens are stepped into several terraces. And the exposure — being on the top of the ridge means wind that gardens lower down simply do not get.
Wind matters more than people expect. It dries soil and containers out much faster, it browns the edges of broad-leaved plants, and it will rock a newly planted shrub loose before the roots take. Plants that thrive in a sheltered Greenwich walled garden can struggle a mile and a half away up here.
Steep gardens
Where the slope has been terraced, expect several levels each with their own edges, walls and beds. It is slower to work than the same area on the flat and quoted accordingly, which is worth understanding rather than being surprised by.
Planting that copes
If you are planting an exposed garden, tougher and lower-growing choices will simply do better than tender ones, whatever the label says. We would rather tell you that before you buy than after the first windy week in March.

Questions about this service
Why do my plants struggle here when they were fine at my last place?
Usually exposure. The top of the ridge is windier and drier than gardens lower down, and that alone can be the difference.
Do you work on the steep streets?
Yes. Stepped and terraced gardens are normal here and we quote for the extra time they take.
