Making leafmould: a practical plan for autumn leaves
Leafmould is an option for leaves you can retain and allow to break down. Before collecting everything into bags, decide where it will be stored and how you intend to use it.
What leafmould is
Leafmould is decomposed leaf material used to improve soil or as a mulch. It is different from making a mixed garden-compost heap. The RHS leafmould guide explains collection in a leaf bin or perforated bags, keeping leaves moist and allowing time for decomposition. It is not an immediate product from this week’s tidy-up.
That waiting period is an important practical consideration. If your garden has nowhere suitable to keep the material, retaining every leaf may create an obstruction rather than a useful resource.
Choose the storage place first
Consider the routes you need to keep open, the space you can leave occupied and whether you can return to inspect the material. Do not block gates, steps or access to utilities. Where a garden is shared, agree the location and responsibility before starting a collection system.
Decide whether the setup is for a small quantity or for much of the season’s leaf fall. You can retain some material and use another appropriate route for the rest; it does not have to be an all-or-nothing decision.
Keep the collection stream clear
Explain which leaves are being retained and where they should go. Keep litter and other unsuitable material out of the collection. Do not describe a mixed pile of sweepings, packaging and plant waste as a bag of leaves.
The RHS guidance covers different leaf types and decomposition rates. Consult it before assuming that all material will break down at the same pace or be ready for the same use. If there is uncertainty about contamination or diseased material, obtain suitable advice before adding it to a reuse plan.
Label and revisit
Record when a batch was gathered and keep different batches identifiable if that helps you track progress. Include the leaf store on your maintenance checklist. The task is not complete merely because bags have been moved out of sight.
Decide who will check it and what it will eventually be used for. If your plans change and you need the space back, reassess the disposal route rather than leaving the material as an indefinite backlog.
Make the distinction clear when booking help
When arranging autumn garden care, specify whether leaves should be retained, collected separately or removed. A general instruction to clear the garden could otherwise conflict with your leafmould plan.
PW Gardening Service provides garden maintenance and agreed green-waste removal within its coverage areas. Send an enquiry with photographs and your intended arrangements. For mixed plant material rather than leaves alone, see composting garden waste.
