Overgrown garden clearance

When growth has hidden the garden, start with a clear plan for what to keep and what to remove. We assess the work, agree the scope and clear the garden waste as part of the job.

First decide what the cleared garden should look like

Clearance can mean opening a path, bringing a lawn back into use or tackling growth across the whole plot. These are different jobs. A useful brief describes the result you need: access to the shed, visible planting beds, a usable sitting area or enough space to begin regular upkeep.

PW Gardening Service carries out green-waste clearance in Lewisham and across our current coverage areas. We are not assuming that every plant in an overgrown garden is unwanted. A shrub hidden by weeds, an established climber or a deliberately wilder corner can all be part of what you want to keep.

What the assessment needs to establish

  • The growth: show long grass separately from dense, tangled or woody growth. Height alone does not describe the work.
  • Retained features: point out plants, pots, edging, beds and areas that should be left alone.
  • Hidden obstacles: mention known steps, uneven ground, wire, irrigation pipes, old tools or damaged structures.
  • Waste types: distinguish garden cuttings from furniture, rubble, paint, old fencing and other non-green materials. Do not assume mixed waste is part of the quote.
  • The route out: show the garden gate, passageway, steps and route to the road, including access through the house.

Photographs from several positions are more useful than a single close-up. There is no need to enter unsafe growth to take them. If part of the garden cannot be seen safely, tell us that instead.

Agree the work before cutting starts

Mark the boundaries of the job and discuss how waste will be handled. A pile of cuttings can be much bulkier than the standing growth suggests, and a long carry through a narrow passage affects the work. The quote should reflect both clearing and removal, not just the visible area of the garden.

If work reveals something that was not visible during assessment, it needs discussion. Clearance does not automatically include repairs to fences, paving or sheds, or treatment of every plant that might regrow. Describe those concerns at the enquiry stage so the required work is understood.

What happens after the first clear-up?

A cleared garden still needs a manageable next step. You may want the lawn cut regularly, the edges defined or beds kept weeded. Decide which parts you can maintain yourself and which need ongoing help. Our garden maintenance service is the place to arrange that routine; it is a separate decision from the initial clearance.

For a garden that is accessible and mainly needs loose ends dealt with, a one-off tidy may be the better description. For already gathered cuttings, see garden waste removal.

Separate the garden reset from the longer-term plan

It can help to split the brief into what needs to become accessible first and what can wait. Clearing a route or uncovering the lawn may be the immediate priority; deciding how borders should look can follow once they are visible. Tell us which areas need attention first and what you hope to use them for. We can then discuss the clearance scope and whether a later maintenance arrangement is useful, without treating the whole garden as a single all-or-nothing job.

Common questions

Questions about this service

Is garden clearance the same as waste collection?

No. Clearance includes work on the growth in the garden. Waste collection starts with material that has already been cut or gathered. Tell us which you need, or whether the job includes both.

Can I keep some of the plants?

Yes. Identify the plants and areas you want retained before work starts. If you are unsure what something is, flag it for discussion rather than including it in the removal list.

Can you quote from photographs?

Photos help us understand the enquiry, but dense growth can hide obstacles and the amount of work. We may need to see the garden before confirming the scope and price.
