Summer lawn care: adjust the routine to the garden

A summer mowing arrangement should respond to the lawn in front of you. Review growth, use and access rather than insisting on the same task at every visit.

Review the routine when growth slows

The RHS mowing guide advises less frequent mowing during drought and warns against excessively close cutting. A shorter cut is not a sensible substitute for reviewing the routine.

If you use a gardener, explain any change you have noticed before the visit. Take a photograph from the usual viewpoint and compare it with earlier ones. Do not diagnose every change in colour or growth from an image alone; persistent or unexplained problems may need specific assessment.

Match the brief to how you use the lawn

Summer may mean more furniture, toys or temporary equipment in the garden. Agree what will be moved before mowing and who will move it. Identify any areas that should be left undisturbed rather than assuming the gardener will know what has changed.

If you want part of the garden left longer, show the boundary clearly. Decide how the access route through or around it should be maintained. This is a practical instruction that can be recorded on a photograph and kept with the booking details.

Plan for holidays without an extreme cut

Before time away, decide whether the lawn will be left until you return or whether someone has agreed to maintain it. Supply access arrangements and a contact method for questions. Do not assume a regular appointment includes permission to enter through a different route while you are away.

Ask what happens if conditions change. A mowing visit might need rearranging rather than being carried out simply because it is on the calendar. If a gap produces substantial growth, plan the return using our long-grass guide instead of expecting an ordinary trim.

Keep watering and treatment decisions separate

A mowing booking does not automatically include a watering plan, diagnosis or lawn treatments. If those are concerns, describe them explicitly and seek appropriate guidance for the lawn and any local water-use restrictions. Avoid adding products simply because a general summer checklist suggests them.

Record what has already been applied, if anything, so anyone advising on the lawn has the relevant history. Follow product instructions and keep the information available rather than relying on memory of a container’s colour or brand.

Agree what success means for the next visit

The next useful action may be a suitable cut, attention to the edges, a review of the lawn or another agreed maintenance task. Confirm any change in scope before work starts. See mowing frequency for reviewing intervals and lawn edging for defining the boundary work.
