Lawn edging: decide which job you need

A tidy grass edge starts with a clear boundary. Decide whether you want the existing edge maintained or its shape changed before choosing tools, materials or a service.

Three meanings of lawn edging

People use the same phrase for different things: trimming grass along an established boundary, re-cutting the line between lawn and bed, or installing a physical edging product. A search for “lawn edging” may show all three, but they are not interchangeable jobs.

PW Gardening Service’s lawn-edging service concerns cut edges between grass, borders and paths. Do not assume that a quote for that work includes supplying or installing metal, timber, brick or plastic edging.

If the boundary is already where you want it

Show the full edge and explain what looks untidy. Grass may be projecting across a path or obscuring the outline of a bed. Point out narrow corners and obstacles as well as the straight sections. The work should preserve the line you want, not quietly enlarge a border or shrink the lawn.

When requesting maintenance, say whether the edge is to be included with each grass cut or addressed separately. This makes it easier to compare quotes for the same outcome.

If you want to change the shape

Sketch the proposed line or mark it in a reversible way before anyone cuts. Check it from the house and from the main route through the garden. Consider whether the change affects space for furniture, a mower route or access to existing plants.

Agree which side of the line is to remain grass. Discuss the material to be removed and how the resulting edge should look. A photograph can be useful for communicating a curve, but it does not replace checking the actual ground and nearby features.

Note what sits beside and below the edge

Mention irrigation pipes, cables or other known buried features before cutting into soil. Show paving that is loose or damaged, exposed roots and beds with plants close to the boundary. A gardener needs that information to assess the work; neat edging is not a repair for an unstable path.

For DIY work, choose equipment appropriate to the specific task and follow its safety instructions. This guide helps define the job rather than prescribing a tool or a cutting depth for every garden.

Include clearing up in the scope

Ask what happens to loose grass, soil and other material generated by the work. Keep the agreed waste scope clear, especially where an old edging product or broken paving is also present. Green-waste removal should not be assumed to include every material beside the lawn.

If both the lawn surface and edge need attention, discuss mowing and edging together. For weedy beds beyond the line, see border upkeep. Contact us with photographs and your postcode to arrange a quote within our coverage area.
