What affects the cost of garden maintenance?
The useful price is the one for your agreed job. Compare the work included, the visit arrangement and the garden's starting condition before comparing headline figures.
Why a garden’s size does not tell the whole story
Two gardens with similar dimensions can require different work. One might be mostly open grass with easy access. Another might have closely planted beds, several sets of steps and a narrow route through the house. A quote needs to describe those differences, not just the length and width of the plot.
PW Gardening Service provides individual quotes. This page does not publish a typical hourly rate or a national price range, because neither would establish what your particular job includes.
Compare these five things
- Starting condition. Is the quote for a maintained garden or for bringing accumulated growth back under control?
- Task list. Does it cover mowing alone, or also edging, weeding, cutting back and clearing up?
- Visit arrangement. Is it a defined one-off job, recurring work, or time booked against a priority list?
- Access. Are there stairs, shared entrances, narrow gates or a long carry to the road?
- Waste and materials. What leaves the garden, what stays, and are any agreed plants or materials priced separately?
Use the same description when requesting more than one quote. Otherwise a lower figure may refer to a smaller job rather than a better price for the same work.
Separate the first visit from the routine
A garden with a backlog may need an initial tidy-up or clearance before regular upkeep makes sense. Ask whether the first visit has a different scope and what later visits will cover.
Avoid assuming a recurring visit will gradually resolve every outstanding job. Specify the result you want from the initial work and the areas you want maintained afterwards. A written list makes it easier to see whether both parties mean the same thing.
Questions worth asking before accepting
Ask whether the price is for the agreed result or an amount of time, what happens if additional work is discovered, and how any change will be approved. Confirm access, payment arrangements and the approach to unsuitable weather. Get the total payable and the treatment of any applicable taxes or agreed extras made clear by the provider.
For regular care, ask how the arrangement can be reviewed when growth or your needs change. A fixed day can be useful, but it should still be clear which tasks are included and what happens when a planned task is not appropriate.
Prepare a quote request in one message
Include your postcode, wide garden photographs, closer images of the problem areas, an access photograph and a short priority list. Say whether you want recurring garden maintenance or a one-off job. Mention existing waste separately from waste the work will create.
Send your enquiry to PW Gardening Service. If most of the work is clearing substantial overgrowth, use the separate garden-clearance cost guide to prepare that brief.
